Custom K&N Intake

Information and pictures by ClubGP Member, Mark Josewski
Update 05/10/98

This custom intake is built out of a 3" PVC Sewer Pipe with a 45 Degree bend. The K&N is a generic tapered Cone with a 4" inlet and is 7" in length. The coupler, also for sewer pipes, is a 3" to 3" rubber coupler. The Pipe and Coupler can be bought at Home Depot or Lowes for under $15.00 . The K&N can be purchased at Pep Boys and other automotive parts retails for $45-$70. You will also need a PCV grommet which is about $2.50. The grommet holds the Air Flow Sensor in snug just like the factory.

Two of the K&N Filters you can use include the RF-1007 (which has the chrome cap) and the RU-2590 which has the flat black cap. Both of these are 7" filters. As some of you already know, there are other K&N filters that can fit, including some of the 9" variety.

Total cost...$55-$80 dollars.

The entire process takes about 20 minutes or so if you are relatively "handy". First step is to remove the cross bar that partially covers the airbox. Next step is to remove your current airfilter and air box. When you open the airbox, you will see your airfilter first. Remove that and place it to the side. Next, you will see your ECM in the bottom of the airbox (your computer!). Carefully remove it and place it aside. You will NOT need to unplug it. Next remove the hose that connects the airbox to the intake on the engine. This will give you room to remove the box. Next, remove the bolts that hold the airbox in, and remove it! The rest is pretty easy, and the pictures below should help you...

I've noticed better pickup in the midrange and top end. It also makes a cool whining sound when the Supercharger kicks in now.
