What is one of the most popular questions I get asked about upgrading our Grand Prix's stereo system? "Can I replace the head unit with a better one, and still retain the steering wheel controls?". Well, the answer is yes! You are however, a little limited in the models you can use.
Any of the Sony head units that come with the RM-X2S or RM-X4S wired remote (which looks like a small joystick) can be used. For you true audiophiles, the best unit currently available is the Sony ES CDX-C910. SoundGate makes an interface (part number GMSW1) that allows the factory steering wheel controls to control any of the Sony headunits that support the remote explained above. You can find or order this Soundgate part at most any mobile electronics retailer. This device would be located in your dash behind your new Sony deck. It is wired between the new headunit, and the factory wiring harness which feeds to steering wheel controls. Installation for the average car audio "do-it yourselfer" should not take more then 15-30 minutes.
Sony ES CDX-C910If you plan on adding a CD Changer, and you are using one of the Sony headunits, I would recommend either the CDX-805 or the CDX-91 changers. They are part of the Sony ES line, and are great CD Changers.
All I have discussed so far is conditioned on the fact that you want to keep the steering wheel controls. If you are not so "limited", there are many great decks on the market! The upper end includes Eclipse, Clarion, Sony ES, Alpine and others. My best advice here is to just do your own homework. Everyone has their own features and looks that they like. You won't go wrong getting one of these manufacturers high end units.
The same goes for aftermarket CD Changers. Prices vary quite a bit, so pick one with the features you like that will work with your newly chosen Head unit replacement.
If you have information on other Headunit Upgrades you would like to see here, please let us know!
